Growing up as a young man in Kentucky the thought of infertility and surrogacy never occurred to me.  My journey with it all started when I was presented with an opportunity to work with Sara Clay who is a highly recognized reproductive law specialist, both nationally and internationally. The most important lesson I have observed from Sara is that there is nothing more important than our clients and the goals we share with them of having a family and helping those families.

Although I was excited about the opportunity to work with her, at the time, I had no idea the blessing and journey that I was about to embark upon. As a paralegal, I had not expected that one day I would specialize in surrogacy or be presented with an opportunity to make such an impact on so many lives.

Upon reflection, it was clearly my calling. This passion and career, like most, is not without sacrifice. The attention to detail, compassion and commitment it takes is demanding and yet worth every sacrifice to achieve the end results. It’s the goal of helping those who have continuously struggled with having a child, those desperately wanting to have a child to finally have their family and those fully committed to helping others have their family.

Over the years I realized that this had been a part of my life long before it became my life. There are people I love and care for who have struggled silently without assistance. This is something most of us take for granted. The number of 1 in 8 who struggle to conceive means that you too care and love someone who is struggling. They will not wear a ribbon or go out of their way to tell you of this struggle. It is intimate, it is painful and it is a trial unlike any other.

To my loved ones who have struggled and are struggling, it is with the sincerest of emotions that I tip my cap to your strength to continue and ultimately persevere. To those that have shared with me (and others) about their journey, you have given hope to others who are silently going through the same thing.

To all the proud parents we’ve helped, the proud parents to be and the supportive surrogates and their spouses, I thank you. I know the journey, at the end of the day, is a fulfilling and rewarding one that each of us involved can reflect on from time to time. In helping you and the journey we share, you have truly helped me in making my life a complete and fulfilling one.

So, in honor of this week, National Infertility Awareness Week, I want to send my love and support to you all.  I am here to help and will help you – just ask me and know that I’m already thinking of you.

Truly,

Marcus Durbin
Paralegal and Consultant
