“How can there be too many children” That is like saying there are too many flowers.”

Mother Teresa

When writing about National Infertility Awareness Week it is hard to know where to start.  The insidious disease affects 1 in every 8 people in this world, all of whom only want one thing…to grow their family with children.

And, as spring unfolds once again and flowers are blooming, this quote is quite poignant.  When starting to write this article,

I found many inspirational quotes from St. Teresa that helped me get the point across. April 25th starts our week, which is entitled this year as “Infertility Uncovered” It is an attempt to eradicate the shame that so many experience due to biology and to ask for everyone’s help.

National Infertility Awareness Week began in 1989 by the national awareness group, RESOLVE, which has now joined the American Society for Reproductive Medicine, the nation’s provider of the guidelines which each of us in the industry follows on a daily basis.

In 2010, NIAW week was officially recognized by the Department of Human Health Services as a federally recognized week of observance.

“We ourselves feel that what we are doing is just a drop in the ocean. But the ocean would be less because of that missing drop.”

So, what can we do to help?

• Spread the word of this disease to everyone you know. Someone you know is suffering from it.

• Be mindful of questions asked to those who do not yet have children.

• Offer support, reach out to help, even call a legislator to assist with necessary insurance reform.  There are walks to participate in, pledges to assist, and shoulders to be there for if a friend is in need.

At Tomorrow’s Parents International, each year we donate our services to a couple in need. We look forward to the opportunity to do so again in 2019. You can help, too!

“The good you do today will often be forgotten, do good anyway.”
